Earlier this offseason, the Nationals acquired Brian Lawrence from the San Diego Padres in a trade. A couple days ago, it was discovered that Lawrence has a potentially career-ending arm injury. As Jim Bowden and Frank Robinson disagree over whether the Nats should have done an MRI as part of the pre-trade physical, I think they are missing one very important element of this trade that makes it a win for the Nats even if Lawrence never pitches again: they got rid of Vinna Castilla in the trade. You can’t put a dollar value on that.

Jim Rice is angry that he’s not in the Hall of Fame. [The Boston Globe requires a free login, but if you don't want to sign up, go to www.bugmenot.com to get a login.] The more he talks, the more I hope he never makes it.

So the Yankees signed Scott Erickson to a minor league contract, with General Manager Brian Cashman referring to him as an “insurance policy.” Apparently Cashman wants to battle the Astros and Jeff Bagwell for the title of Worst Insurance Policy Ever. The article mentions that Joe Torre, Ron Guidry, and Joe Kerrigan watched Erickson throw off a mound for ten minutes on Thursday; what it doesn’t mention is that those ten minutes elapsed between the time that Erickson released his first pitch and when it hit the catcher’s glove.

Well, really, it was never gone, but it was pretty stagnant for several months. That’s right, the site that my brother made famous and I made great, We Made Out In A Tree And This Old Guy Sat And Watched Us, is back with a new design and fresh new content. Here are some of the highlights of the new site:

I respect Ozzie Guillen for what he accomplished with the White Sox last year. That doesn’t stop me from thinking he is a jackhole. No, I don’t really care that he didn’t go to the White House with the rest of the White Sox, even though I have my suspicions that it was a lot more of a political statement than he and Hugo Chavez want you to believe. No, I am not too upset that he promised last summer that he would retire if the White Sox won the World Series, only to reneg on that promise once they actually own — we all say things knowing that we will probably never be forced to back them up, and on the rare occasions that our team doesn’t underperform like we were counting on them to, we weasel out of our statements. What’s bothering me about Ozzie today is his interview in Sports Illustrated, in which he takes shots at A-Rod.

Just a quick note about something that annoys me: people referring to the famous T206 Honus Wagner baseball card (the world’s most valuable baseball card) as the “Honus Wagner rookie card.” I think the reason this happens is that, generally, a player’s most valuable card is his rookie card, so OBVIOUSLY the most valuable card in the world must be a rookie card. Well, the T206 was issued in 1909, twelve years after Wagner’s rookie year. The reason this card is so valuable is NOT because it was Wagner’s rookie card (it wasn’t), but because there were very few printed. It is all about the supply, not necessarily the demand.

I believe in Web Standards. I believe that Andy Clarke was mostly (or completely) right when he said:
While I understand that for many, learning standards based development is difficult, particularly for creative people who have not been required to work with code before, I believe that the time has now passed for those working with old fashioned methods to be called web professionals. There are now so many web sites, blogs or publications devoted to helping people learn standards and accessible techniques that there are now no excuses not to work with semantic code or CSS. Those people still delivering nested table layout, spacer gifs or ignoring accessibility can no longer call themselves web professionals. (Source)

I think the entire Jeff Bagwell situation is ridiculous. Now, I will tell you why.
